Note: After 27 years at Spring High School I retired and still had teaching in my blood. I had
been eyeing Concordia Lutheran for some time. Concordia is just off 2920, near Tomball Texas. I
was very impressed with the principal when I interviewed there in the spring of 2000. In 2000-2001
my confidence in teaching was restored because the Lutherans still have Christ in their approach to
teaching. Prayers are frequent and though I in no way wanted to become a Lutheran, I was very
moved by the presence of prayer in school, which was much like the “old days” of teaching. Faculty
meetings took on new meaning for me because Concordia’s meetings were also devotionals,
geared to help you in the classroom. It was like the “old days” in which you were complimented for
you teaching and were encouraged by parents. While at Concordia, It was never a problem to “get
hold of” at least one parent if contact was needed. Most of the time, I was able to speak to both
Mother and Father if necessary; A big change from my last few years in public schools. In 2000 I
enjoyed coaching the JV soccer team and assisting with the varsity. We were able to win district on
the varsity level and advanced to the state final 4 with the varsity. We had a great group of kids to
work with and they were respectful and teachable. My duties really kept me busy as I taught
physical science, astronomy, and coached soccer. I usually found that almost on a daily basis, “Oh
we forgot to tell you…” You are also supposed to help keep the soccer field mowed and oh, by the
way you are the sponsor of club…. But, I enjoyed the challenges and felt wanted once again. In the
spring of 2000, the principal who hired me was replaced by the assistant principal, Joel Bode. The
transition was easy because Joel had been with the Spring district and adopted many of their rules.
My head soccer coach was a delight to work for because he was a workaholic, who took his job very
seriously. Everything changed when 911 struck the towers during the fall of 2001. I thanked God
that I was not in a public school and we were allowed …..Not only allowed, but encouraged to pray.
It was a time when we recognized Christ was important in schools..MAY THE FORCE (GOD) BE
