Ode to Annie G
.
By Don Henderson
Annie G. taught us all
You see,
You, your brother, sister, Dad
And me
Reading, ‘ritin, ‘rithmetic
Enough grammar to make you sick
It wasn’t her fault if it
Didn’t stick
Our Annie G. ruled with an
Iron hand
Strong discipline at
Her command
Inside, hidden from many
Was her Godly part
Her kind and
Gentle heart
Art, math, grammar, reading, choir
And more
Annie G. taught you until your
Brain was sore
Annie G. was one of a kind
That’s for sure
Heart of gold, unwavering,
Dedication pure
Chosen as one of God’s
Special creatures
Chosen to be a teacher
Our Annie G.
Taught you and me
She taught more than books,
Grammar or math
She taught us how to follow
The right earthly path
For 50 years or more she
Gave it her all
Teacher, educator, friend,
Answering God’s call
She did her very best
Instilling values so we
Could pass Life’s test
Now time has passed and
Memories too
Many wonder and say,
“Annie, who?”
But God knows her and
She now has a heavenly job
Teaching grammar to
An angelic mob
Hail to Miss Annie Pope Gilreath
Who taught us all
Thank God she answered
her call
Lord, forgive us our dangling participles
And grammatical sins
But look how much worse
If Annie G. had never been.
So, we all salute this lady
Who dedicated her life
Helping student’s cure
Grammatical strife
God has a special place in heaven
For all teachers and ladies like her
Though, naming a school for Annie G
Might never occur
If that honor on earth can never be
We know that God will honor this lady
Throughout Eternity,
Our Annie G.
Miss Annie Pope Gilreath we honor and thank thee!!
