"PRECIOUS LORD"
Someone sent my wife a link to the story about how and
why “Precious Lord” was written, giving the credit to the band
leader, Tommy Dorsey. In the back of my mine, I suspicioned
that something was amiss. I went to Snopes and found the
story was real, but the author was not Tommy Dorsey the band
leader, but Thomas Dorsey, a black minister. During the
research I found a close association with Mahalia Jackson
and Thomas Dorsey. I eventually found links to songs of
Mahalia’s rich voice, singing gospel. We all should check out
stories before we send them “willy-nilly”.
To hear Mahalia sing, brings back childhood memories
when we would listen to her beautiful and soulful voice on the
radio and on the old 78’s. I don’t care who you are, black,
white, brown, purple or rainbow, you cannot listen to Mahalia
without feeling electricity in her soulful voice!! She sings from
the heart, from her soul and, because of her powerful voice,
she is not drown out by the music, but is supported by it. We
grew up with acapella in our church, but when we wanted to
listened to real soulful music we turned to Mahalia. Below you
will find links to the real originator of “Precious Lord” and to the
voice of Mahalia Jackson, who has few equals. May I remind
us all that we are not separated by color or race, but by good
and evil and until we unite in recognizing that there is good and
evil, we will not be united. I submit to you that God gave
Mahalia an Angelic voice, given to unite us all.
